SC Rep. Timmons Leaves No Doubt-He Doesn’t Believe in Democracy

William Timmons on Saturday joined with other far right colleagues in both the House and Senate to say that they will contest the electoral college this coming Wednesday in a fruitless and despicable attempt to overthrow the will of the people and create an anti-democratic coup to keep Trump in power.

Timmons like most of his Republican colleagues are smart enough to know that the idea that somehow Trump really won but had the election stolen because of voter fraud is completely ludicrous. However, they know that many of their constituents hold onto the words of Trump as if he was their messiah. Therefore because they think it will help their political future, they just throw away the idea of democracy because as if it was just a roadblock in their political careers.

At least we now know where these Representatives and Senators stand. They could care less about democracy. This should be extremely concerning as we think about the future of our country. What kind of system would we be living in if Congress can overturn the results of a presidential election if they do not like the new person that was elected? How would there ever be a political change if this became the norm? Fortunately it will not work this time as the Democratic led House will of course not go along with the coup and neither will the Republican led Senate, but it does show what many would do when they know it will not change the result and is based on a conspiracy theory so far from reality that the conservative Supreme Court (including 3 of Trump’s own nominees) unanimously rejected it. What will happen the next time when there could be a chance to actually change the election and there was a closer election than the blowout in 2020.

Timmons should be removed from Congress because what he is showing is that he does not believe in the very Constitution that he has sworn to uphold. Even more importantly, he doesn’t believe in democracy. We cannot have individuals like this representing us if they have no loyalty to the very form of government they claim to be a part of.
