South Carolina Joins Racist and Cowardly Stunt to Subvert Democracy

This week, South Carolina joined with 17 other Republican run states to ask the Supreme Court to essentially overturn the election in the states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Georgia. It is a political stunt that will not work, but it is horrifically racist and against the basic principles of a democratic republic. In doing so, our attorney general Alan Wilson displays the policies of the days of Jim Crow where only white votes would count.
Essentially, these Republican states led by Texas are asking the Supreme Court to allow the state legislators to select the electors and ignore what the popular vote is based on some false conspiracy of voter fraud. What it would do is undermine the the will of the people. What would be the point of voting in the presidential election if the state legislator could just overturn the vote if it goes to the party they don’t like? It’s something that resembles what would go on in a country that Republicans claim to distain like Venezuela or Cuba.
Of course, there is a largely racist element to this as well. Biden won those states largely thanks to Hispanic and black voters in cities like Atlanta, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Philadelphia. Our Attorney General is basically saying we shouldn’t allow those votes to count, but we should instead let the white legislators overturn the peoples’ votes.
People didn’t die fighting for civil rights and voting rights for these backwards actions from people like Alan Wilson. Fortunately given the Supreme Court’s latest rulings, it seems like this case is going to go nowhere and it’s just a political stunt. However, it’s such a horrific precedent for the future of our democratic republic.
The GOP has made it quite clear that they do not care about the democratic will of the people. They care about power. They are more than willing to subvert democracy in order to get just a little more. Though they may not get away with it this time, we should never forget these cowardly, racist, and despicable actions of Attorney Generals of like Alan Wilson.
